My favorite conversations to have, will always be about the proper use of our platforms as Black public figures in America, Law of Attraction and BOOKS and I was the happiest I've ever been, getting to talk to my dawg Cordae about all of the above.
Cordae's firing up the charts with his Roddy Ricch assisted single, 'Gifted,' but also graced headlines when he protested for the arrest of the Louisville cops that shot and killed Breonna Taylor in her own home.
Cordae is no stranger to speaking his mind, and delivering a train of thought deeper and usually more philosophical than his generation of peers. He has been likened to the types of legend MC's that precede him such as Nas and J. Cole.
Right before lockdown, Cordae went on his "Lost Boy" tour with opening act, 24kGoldn, delivering the performance of his debut, Grammy-nominated album for fans before the 'Rona ruined the outside for us all.
CORDAE has been extremely vocal with his platform, with his ovation deserving performance at the 2019 BET Awards with H.E.R. and their performance of 'Lord is Coming.'
This isn't my first run-in with Cordae, we see each other at almost every major music event and festival (pre-Corona). But we've sat down before for an interview, right before the XXL Freshmen lineup was announced, featuring himself in 2019.
Most recently, the Baltimore / Carolina native made headlines again when he publicly dropped the 'YBN' in front of his name, just going as solo Cordae - erupting the internet with rumors that the YBN crew was no more, or at least, Cordae was just out. But he reassures us they're all still cool. They all came in the game together, off playing video games together online.
Are you a fan of Cordae?
Especially after the 2019 XXL Freshmen Cypher, Cordae rose as one of the fan favorites - with his wordplay and a flow reminiscent to the OG rappers he has always credited for studying; Big L, Nas, Hov, Biggie, 2Pac and more.
His sound stands out amongst the rest, with attention to metaphorical flows and punchlines - something that seems less common in the new generation of hip-hop.
If not just his music, Cordae has a very happy personality - which is what draws most of his fans to him. Even when we met, he's always been very easy going, an honest and genuine person. Someone who isn't here to "sell" you on his music, rather just invite you for a conversation.
