Norfolk Native, Keyontae Johnson, Awake From Medically-Induced Coma

Sending nothing but positivity from Norfolk all the way to Florida.

A Norfolk-native, Keyontae Johnson, is currently in the hospital after collapsing during a game this past Saturday. Johnson was rushed to the hospital and was listed in critical, but stable, condition for a few days. Although it has not been confirmed what caused Johnson to collapse, it should be noted that earlier this year, Keyontae tested positive for COVID-19. The virus can cause myocarditis, a heart condition, but, again, the school and family have not revealed a diagnosis at this point although his parents stated they will keep the community up to date.

The good news? He's not only awake now after being placed in a medically-induced coma, but he's also talking! "Keyontae is in stable condition today, breathing on his own and speaking with us and with his doctors here at UF Health. He even FaceTimed the team! We feel so much love and support from everyone, and we're beyond grateful for the care and attention that Keyontae has received throughout these past several days," a statement from his parents, Nika and Marrecus Johnson. "We will continue to share updates about Keyontae's health and progress. We have seen how much people love and care for him. We hope people recognize that information that doesn't come from us or the athletic department may not be accurate. We are working closely with Keyontae's doctors and the UAA to provide information to everyone who cares so deeply about Keyontae and has been praying for him."

We'll continue to keep Keyontae in our thoughts and prayers and wish him a speedy, full recovery!
