Governor Northam Requiring Virginians to Wear Face Masks Starting Friday

New York Mayor De Blasio Distributes Information On The Coronavirus In Union Square

Did you do your homework over the weekend?

In a press conference last week, Governor Northam issued some homework to all Virginians: Make your own or buy a mask over the weekend. The reason, other than the obvious - it can help prevent the spread of the Coronavirus, was unclear. He assured Virginia he would clarify today, 5.26.20.

During his 2p press conference, Governor Northam announced beginning Friday, May 29th, 2020, all Virginians will be required to wear face masks in all establishments. Of course, as with any policy, there are some exceptions such as:

  • While eating or drinking
  • While exercising
  • If you have trouble breathing or are unable to remove the mask without help
  • If your health conditions prohibit wearing a face covering

He did also state law enforcement will not be involved in enforcing these rules. Instead enforcement will fall on the Virginia Department of Health for non-compliant businesses and they have the ability to issue a warning and then work with the courts to revoke a business license.

After making this announcement, a reporter mentioned how people are saying he doesn't have the "moral authority" to put this ban in place after being spotted on the Oceanfront over the Memorial Day Weekend mask-less. He responded with "I was not prepared because my mask was in the car. I take full responsibility for that. People held me accountable and I appreciate that. In the future, when I'm out in the public, I will be better prepared. But this is not just about me - this is about all Virginians and their public safety."
