Hampton Roads Transit Suspends Fare During Coronavirus Pandemic

Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) has just announced the suspension of ride fare on buses, light rail vehicles and ferries April 10 through June 10. This is in an effort to assist the impacted community during the Coronavirus pandemic. Doing this will prevent riders from interacting with the operators and having to touch the fare boxes.

Wondering where they'll get their funding for the next 60 days? State and Federal emergency funds due to COVID-19 will be used to pay for each participating city's budgeted ridership.

They are also taking special measures to not just encourage but ENSURE social distancing. They are asking riders to:

  • Wear face masks
  • Board and exit at the back of the bus
  • Limit travel to only essential trips (work, groceries, checking on a family member, etc.)

Seats will also be blocked off to comply with the 6 feet social distancing guidelines that are currently in place.
