Not long ago, fans were overcome with joy when the Television Academy of Arts and Sciences revealed the nominees for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards. Shows that were previously snubbed by other award ceremonies like Lovecraft Country and I May Destroy You received multiple nominations. Adding on, breakout stars like Regé-Jean Page and O-T Fagbenle had opportunities to win their first Emmys. Not to mention, Cedric The Entertainer was cast as the host while Allyson Felix and Anthony Anderson were named presenters.

Then, the night of the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards arrived. All of the biggest stars in Hollywood packed into Microsoft Theater for an incredible evening filled with laughs and tear-jerking moments. Mj Rodriguez had the opportunity to become the first Black trans woman to win a major acting category and Michael K. Williams was poised to posthumously win an Emmy. Unfortunately, the night didn't go as planned. Outstanding series like Lovecraft Country, Pose and I May Destroy You were not selected to win any of the major show categories. Moreover, none of the Black stars that attended won an award for acting. While Michaela Coel and RuPaul's victories did add a bit of color to the winner's circle, many viewers walked away with a feeling of disappointment.

"The Emmys is like that tv show you're still watching *just in case* it finally does something different, but every year it proves you wrong and does its same old thing again. and again. and again," Los Angeles Times reporter Ashley Lee tweeted.

With shows like Insecure, Snowfall, Atlanta and A Black Lady Sketch Show preparing new seasons, there is hope for a better outcome in 2022. However, it is hard to be optimistic when there were a record number of non-white nominees this year and Black creatives were still erased. Until next year, #EmmySoWhite will be a part of the conversation.
