Fans think Sabrina Carpenterâs new song is a response to Olivia Rodrigoâs viral hit single.
Rodrigo broke the internet â and tons of streaming records â earlier this month with the release of her debut record "Drivers License," which has become really popular among other Gen-Zers. Rodrigoâs song appears to address the 17-year-oldâs rumored ex-boyfriend, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series co-star, Joshua Bassett, 20, as well as Carpenter.
The messiest part of it all: itâs been rumored that Bassett moved on with Carpenter after breaking off his alleged romance with Rodrigo in 2020. Hence, a war of words was started.
Fans took Rodrigoâs âDrivers Licenseâ to be about her past relationship with Bassett, while subtly addressing an unnamed ex and a âblonde girlâ many followers suspected is Carpenter. At one point during the song, Rodrigo sings, "And you're probably with that blonde girl / Who always made me doubt / She's so much older than me / She's everything I'm insecure about."
Well, as of Friday (January 22), it appears the 21-year-old has responded to Rodrigo with a record of her own called âSkin,â in which she tells her side of the rumored love triangle.
âMaybe we could have been friends/ If I met you in another life/ Maybe then we could pretend/ Thereâs no gravity in the words we write/ Maybe you didnât mean it/ Maybe âblondeâ was the only rhyme,â Carpenter sings, an indirect reference to Rodrigoâs âblonde girlâ lyric.
Elsewhere, the Work It actress also seems to flaunt her closeness with Bassett, bragging, âYou can try to get under my skin/ While heâs all on my skin.â
Carpenter ends the track with another clever reference, singing, âI just hope that one day/ We can both caught about it ⊠Donât drive yourself insane/ It wonât always be this way.â
As expected, fans had A LOT to say about "Skin" â see the best reactions below:
