Dwyane Wade is seeking information about gender pronouns to support his transgender daughter, Zaya.
During Tuesday night’s appearance (February 18) on Watch What Happens Live, the NBA icon opened up about speaking with the cast of Pose in order for he and wife Gabrielle Union to gain a better understanding of what it means to be transgender. Wade recalled the experience when responding to a caller who asked him what lesson he learned.
“The lesson that my wife and I learned is we got information. We didn't have a lot of information,” the 38-year-old answered. “We reached out about pronouns. We wanted to make sure we didn't get it wrong. We reached out about the pronouns making sure we said the right thing.”
Wade’s 12-year-old child recently came out as transgender to the couple, who have been nothing but supportive of Zaya’s transition. “She's identifying lady. We wanted to make sure we got the pronouns and language right,” he continued. “We reached out to make sure we had the information we needed. We're learning in this process as well.”
The 13-time NBA All-Star expressed these same reassuring sentiments on Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show.
“We are proud parents of a child in the LGBTQ+ community and we are proud allies as well,” Wade spoke of raising Zaya with Union. “So when our child comes home with a question, our child comes home with an issue, our child comes home with anything, it’s our job as parents to listen to that, to give them the best information we can, to give the best feedback we can.”
