Bomb Threats Targeting Schools, Businesses Nationwide Likely a Hoax

bomb threats appear to be hoax, authorities say

Dozens of bomb threats that were sent to news outlets, government buildings and schools nationwide on Thursday appear to be a hoax, authorities say.

Some of the emails sent contained the subject line: "Think Twice." At least one person said he was told to provide $20,000 or a bomb would be detonated at his location.

Police departments from Palm Beach County, Florida, to Boise, Idaho said they had no reason to believe the threats were credible.

Some schools closed early, while others were evacuated due to the threats. As of noon, the Los Angeles Police Department said they were tracking up to two dozen threats.

Specific details about the threats were not immediately available at the time of this writing.

In a statement, the FBI said they were aware of the wave of bomb threats and investigating the source,  "We are aware of the recent bomb threats made in cities around the country, and we remain in touch with our law enforcement partners to provide assistance. As always, we encourage the public to remain vigilant and to promptly report suspicious activities which could represent a threat to public safety."

Similar threats have been reportedly received in Florida, New York, Massachusetts and Idaho. The source of the threats is not yet known.
